Spain and Portugal
Spain has more land planted to grape vines than any other country. You could sample a new Spanish wine every night of the year and still not experience all the variety that this Country has to offer.
Rioja creates smoky, earthy reds with the Tempranillo grape, while Priorato makes a dense, powerful red from the Garnacha variety. The Ribera del Duero also employs the Tempranillo grape.
Many people think of Spain as a place of nothing but big massive red wines. It’s true much of Spain is quite hot, yet there are many areas such as the Basque county in the center-north and Galicia which is north of Portugal which produces the crisp aromatic Albarino grape.
Lets not forget Portugal, where the famous port wines are made. The Oporto and The Douro Valley have some of the greatest sweet red dessert wines in the world.
